Banderas Series: Site-specific installation of 5 sheer images
Created for my art residency at The Troll House on Pier 26 this set of 5 female gestures are printed of sheer chiffon in jewel tones. They are hung to overlap slightly, creating additional colors that change with the light that streams in through the giant windows facing the Embarcadero, right under the Bay Bridge, in San Francisco.
As a co-work space it is primarily occupied by young, male, tech entrepreneurs. It's the hang out area for beer, foosball, and lunch. The gallery space does not lend itself to conventional exhibits. But with a two-story main room, it is ideal for large hangings. So I created this larger-than-life set of female figures in order to establish a presence and to penetrate the space.
An artist here can be ignored unless she takes up space. A woman even more so. The sheerness of the banderas (flags in Spanish) adds a lightness and a gentleness to the intrusion, as does the grace and simplicity of the drawing styles. The bottoms of these pieces just barely touch a 6' tall person.
