Banderas Series (5): Site-specific installation - gestural flags
Created for my art residency at The Troll House on Pier 26 in 2017, this series of female gestures are printed on white sheer chiffon. This space is right under the Bay Bridge, in San Francisco.
These jewel toned flags are hung from the ceiling in a pythagorean triangle formation, so that they overlap slightly, and create additional colors that change with the light that streams in through the giant windows facing the Embarcadero.
The Troll House is a co-work space primarily occupied by young, male, tech entrepreneurs. The main room/gallery is also the hang-out area for beer, foosball, and lunch, and with very high ceilings (two-story) and windows all around the gallery space does not lend itself very well to conventional exhibits. However, I decided that it is ideal for a new series of monolithic hangings.
I created this larger-than-life group of female figures in order to establish my presence and to penetrate the space. An artist here can be ignored unless she takes up space. A woman even more so. The sheerness of the banderas (flags in Spanish) adds a lightness and a gentleness to the intrusion. The colorful gesture drawings have a grace and simplicity. The bottoms of four of the five banderas just barely touch a 6' tall person.
